This session explores the evolving landscape of EU regulations shaping the future of biobanking, focusing on their ethical, legal and societal implications. Participants will examine the latest developments toward a European Health Data Space (EHDS) and gain comparative insights into how member states interpret and implement these emerging frameworks.

  • Radek Halouzka & Jan Kuráň – EHDS and secondary use of data from biobanks – Czech perspective (output)
  • Peggy Manders – Dutch law on (human) biological material
  • Lifang Liu – The CANDLE project – the “what” and “how” in developing the EHDS-compliant UNCAN.eu network of national cancer data nodes in Member States across Europe
  • Lucie Kulhánková – Preparing a national infrastructure for EHDS implementation: the Dutch approach

Dr. Ricard Martinez Martinez

Ricard Martínez Martínez, Ph.D. in Law, is Associate Professor at the University of Valencia and Director of the Chair of Privacy and Digital Transformation. As ELSI Work Package Leader in EUCAIM and legal expert in CHAIMELEON, he provides guidance on GDPR compliance, secondary use of health data and trustworthy AI in biomedical imaging.

His research focuses on the legal design of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), contributing to the establishment of ethical, secure and interoperable data ecosystems for cancer research across Europe. 

Dr. Stephanie Villar

Since 2000, Dr Stéphanie Villar  has been conducting a successful research career at IARC/WHO, playing a series of roles in different international projects. After completing a 2012 PhD on aflatoxin mutagenesis and HBV in Gambia and Thailand, she became Laboratory Safety Officer in 2017, supervising laboratory services, training collaborators and delivering national and international workshops and lectures.
