#EBW26 Previews: 3C: Biobank advanced technologies: Challenges, opportunities and solutions

This session will present the next generation of biobanking technologies, from automation and digital tracking to integrated data systems and innovative technologies, along with the complex realities of implementing them. Through expert insights and practical case studies, it will show how biobanks are navigating technical obstacles, regulatory demands and evolving standards, while unlocking new opportunities to enhance sample quality, accessibility and long-term value.

Speakers included in this session:

  • Wayne Ng – Implementing e‑consent to digitise biobank recruitment across a multi‑hospital consortium
  • Laura Valentina Renna – Enhancing pre-analytical standardization and biobanking efficiency through automation: The BioCor Biobank experience
  • Nadine Volk – Designing a future proof automated storage facility: Implementation pathways, technical challenges and optimization strategies
  • Carlotta Gamberini, Ivana Marventano and Assunta Ingannato – Automation in rehabilitation biobanking: Enhancing longitudinal sample quality through integrated liquid handling and digital traceability
  • Corrie Wortel – Transforming biobank operations through integrated digital systems and efficient researcher – biobank interfaces
  • José Antonio López-Guerrero – Lyophilization: A sustainable alternative to conventional extracellular vesicles freezing

This session will be chaired by:

Dr. Loes Linsen

Dr. Linsen is operational manager of the UZ KU Leuven Biobank. She is a Master in Biotechnology and obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Hasselt University. Loes entered the biobank world in 2008 when she set up the federated University Biobank Limburg (UBiLim). In that period, she participated in the European FP6 project “Cancer Control using Population-based Registries and Biobanks”. Loes also contributed to the Flemish Biobank, including auditing for the regional biobank audit programme.

In 2016, Loes joined the University Hospitals and University Leuven, where she continues to facilitate all things biobanking from a quality driven perspective. She coordinates developments in study management processes, institutional roll-out of the biobank software MBioLIMS and the implementation of a large-scale cryofacility. Loes is a member of ESBB, ISBER and the ISBER biospecimen research workgroup, as well of several expert working groups in bbmri-eric and bbmri.be.

Dr. Radoslaw Zagożdżon

Dr. Radosław Zagożdżon is an experimental immunologist specialising in cellular immunotherapies, with a special focus on CAR-T and CAR-NK cell strategies. Affiliated with the Medical University of Warsaw, he is the National Node Director for BBMRI.pl and leads translational research integrating molecular oncology, epigenetics, and advanced cellular therapies for malignant or non-malignant disorders.
