#EBW26 Previews: 5A: Building excellence – Developing skills for future biobanking

Ensuring high-quality biobanks demands expertly trained personnel. This session highlights tailored education and training opportunities for the biobank community, covering all roles – from project managers to technical staff handling samples and data. Gain insights into upskilling pathways that enhance competence and drive excellence across biobank operations.

Speakers included in this session:

  • Molina-Roldán E. – From gaps to growth: Ensuring the future of biobank training in europe
  • Andrea Wutte – From community training to a European learning platform: The evolution of the BBMRI-ERIC Academy
  • Yulyana Kalesnik – From sample storage to the motor of AI: The SUSA Living Lab model for future skills
  • Edith Rubin – Bridging the gap: Transforming a hospital biobank into a multidisciplinary hub for the clinical research spectrum
  • Sara Nussbeck – Improvement of biobank biospecimen packing and shipping by specific training efforts

This session will be chaired by:

Dr. Daniel Brucker

Dr. Daniel P. Brucker graduated in biology (Dipl. Biol.) and holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Tübingen (Dr. rer. nat.), where he worked in the field of neurooncology at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and the Senckenberg Institute for Neurooncology in Frankfurt am Main, investigating the metabolism and regulation of transcription factors in brain tumours.

In 2012 he became a coordinator for biobank networks at the University Cancer Center (UCT) Frankfurt, where he focused on the implementation of a local IT infrastructure and the connection to national networks for biobanking. In 2015, Daniel Brucker became the scientific coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Biobank and Database Frankfurt (iBDF) at the University Hospital Frankfurt. Since 2022 he has been the head of the administrative office of the iBDF. He is a member of the steering committee and involved in various working groups of the German Biobank Alliance (bbmri.de).

Prof. Marialuisa Lavitrano

Marialuisa Lavitrano is full professor of Pathology, director of Molecular Medicine Unit and of the Executive Masters’ in Management of Research Infrastructures at Milano-Bicocca University, where she was Pro-Rector for International Affairs from 2006-2013. Over the years, she has contributed to the international strategies of the Ministries of Research and of Health and coordinated the Italian participation in the BioMedical Sciences ESFRI roadmap.

In 2013 she was appointed BBMRI.it (Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure – Italy) Node-Director. In December 2020 she was first elected – confirmed in 2024 – to the board of eight directors of the EOSC Association and she now serves as vice-president.

Prof. Lavitrano has long-term experience in research, management, training and in bioethical aspects of science, with leading roles in 17 European funded projects within H2020 and Horizon programs, 14 of which relate to research infrastructures.
