#EBW26 Previews: 6A: Biobanks as local hubs: Interfaces and facilitators

This session explores the evolving role of biobanks as dynamic local hubs in biomedical research. Learn how biobanks serve as interfaces between researchers, healthcare providers and communities, facilitating data sharing, sample access and collaboration. Discover strategies to enhance their impact on translational research and innovation ecosystems.

Speakers included in this session:

  • Eero Punkka – Biobank as a platform for preventive healthcare and innovation
  • Cecilia Engels – Empowering biobanks as local hubs in a national cancer research infrastructure
  • Konrad Lang – The BBMRI-ERIC Negotiator: A generic platform for federated data, sample and service access management
  • Volodymyr Shekhovtsov – The architecture of the BBMRI.at National Node Biobank Data Communication Platform
  • Juditat Kinkorova – Biobanks as local hubs: Interfaces and facilitators – The role of BBMRI.CZ in the Czech Republic

This session will be chaired by:

Dr. Rocío Aguilar-Quesada

With a PhD in Biochemistry and M.S. in Biobanks, Dr. Aguilar-Quesada has been working as Technical Coordinator at the Andalusian Public Health System Biobank since 2009. Within the Spanish ISCIII Biomodels and Biobanks Platform, she co-coordinates the Organoids HUB and she shares the representation of BBMRI.es in the ELSI Working Group of BBMRI-ERIC.

She is a member of the ESBB Council and ISBER Regional Ambassador for the EMEA Region.

Dr. Giedrė Kvedaravičienė

Dr. Giedrė Kvedaravičienė is an expert in health innovation and policy with experience spanning academic, clinical and governmental settings. Over the last ten years she has contributed to medical innovation through the implementation of advanced therapies, including ATMPs, in clinical practice, while supporting research and policy initiatives at national and EU levels. Her work includes championing population-based and rare disease research with a focus on early diagnosis, translational research and the integration of innovative diagnostics into health systems.

Since early 2024, she has served as Director of Lithuania’s first population biobank at Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, is a member of the advisory boards of the European Partnership for Personalized Medicine (PerMed) and is an active participant in national and international scientific networks.
